In addition to iron, deficiencies in vitamin B12 or folic acid can also lead to anaemia.

Given the importance of diet, certain dietary patterns increase the risk of developing anaemia, namely:

Low intake of meat, fish or pulses;

Low intake of green leafy vegetables;

Poorly planned vegetarian diets;

Very restrictive diets.

Not all forms of anaemia are diet-related. Blood loss (such as heavy periods or gastrointestinal bleeding, amongst others), chronic inflammatory diseases or impaired intestinal absorption may be the cause of the problem. In these cases, diet is important, but it is a complement to treatment.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_heading title=”When food is part of the solution” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” title_level=”h2″ title_font=”–et_global_heading_font||||||||” title_font_size=”18px” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_heading][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”-18px|||||” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Diet plays a key role in both the prevention and treatment of anaemia. Here are some essential strategies:

1.Increase your iron intake

Iron from animal sources (haem iron): found mainly in red meat, poultry, fish and offal (liver). This type of iron is absorbed more effectively by the body;

Plant-based iron (non-haem iron): found in pulses (beans, lentils, chickpeas), spinach, tofu and nuts. It is absorbed less efficiently, but absorption can be improved by combining foods.

2. Improving iron absorption

Combining foods rich in plant-based iron with foods rich in vitamin C (such as oranges, kiwis or peppers) in the same meal significantly increases its absorption;

Some foods inhibit iron absorption. Coffee, tea, red wine and calcium-rich foods (such as dairy products), when consumed during or immediately after iron-rich meals, can impair iron absorption.

3. Ensuring adequate vitamin B12 and folic acid

Vitamin B12 is found exclusively in foods of animal origin (meat, fish, eggs, dairy products), so vegetarians and vegans should consider taking supplements.

Eating a varied diet that includes green leafy vegetables (spinach, kale), pulses, eggs and nuts helps to ensure you get enough folic acid.

In practice, aim for a varied and balanced diet rich in iron, taking care to combine foods rich in vitamin C with vegetables – for example, by adding raw peppers or lemon juice to your meal.

In some cases, particularly with established iron-deficiency anaemia, iron supplementation may be necessary. This should always be guided by a healthcare professional, as diet alone may not be sufficient to correct the deficiency.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_heading title=”Conclusion” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” title_level=”h2″ title_font=”–et_global_heading_font||||||||” title_font_size=”18px” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_heading][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”-20px|||||” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

Diet is a powerful tool in the prevention and treatment of anaemia, but it is no substitute for a medical diagnosis.
